Making Builds
I love trying to make builds. The problem is I'm terrible at it. What are some pointers you guys could give me. Example basic template, good elites and where to test. I already know that for pretty well every build savage shot and d-shot are a must.

Making builds is also hard because all the good ones are already made.

I usually just choose an elite or a specific task i want to accomplish with my build.
Lets say i want to build an interrupting ranger build.
What should my secondary be?
What interrupting skills should I bring?
Do i need more damage? Energy management? Defense?
Could i properly fight against a (insert a profession)?
Or I could say i wanted to make a build around Burning arrows
What does burning arrow do? It causes degeneration
How could i augment this? longer fire, different degens, spreading it.
What skills could help me do this?
Do i need more damage? Energy management?....
In sum, choose something to center your build around. Pair skills that synergies well to accomplish that. Then make sure your build works in all necessary situations.

Begin by making a build using just your prime class ignore the secondary for now.
Choose skills from one or two skill tracks so you can concentrate points there.
Consider the energy cost of the skill, cooldown time before you can use it again, casting time and does it cause exaustion.
You want a balance of skill costs no point just putting in heavy cost skills you need to be able to case them when needed not just fire off a salvo and then wait around to regain energy.
Using builds that you find in online guides usually has the problem that they are based around a skill you havnt got or cannot get.
That's ok read up on what the missing skill does and find an equivalent skill you can get.
Those are the basic things to consider when you make a build.

the easiest way to make a build is to run a ranger, then put dshot, savage, troll, stride, mending, res sig, apply poison, and an elite on ur bar. insta god-mode. or make a warrior and put bulls strike on ur bar, then if axe put on eviscerate, executioners, dchop, frenzy/rush, or if hammar put dev/magehunters or w/e ppl run now, crushing, hammar blow, flail/enraging. or if ur an ele run GoI+ steam and a bunch of snares. then if you're a rt/a run hidden caltrops and if you play monk run woh or rc and then some stuff like spirit bond or prot spirit and stuff like that but no res. well that's pretty much all there is to know about good build making, now that ur leet maybe i'll see you in ra ad1 talking about religion and politics like all the other 2cool4gw types (i am 2cool4gw).

some tips
Since you didn’t specify a purpose for a build, I’ll try to give you some general advice. First off, making a ranger build isn’t all that different from any other profession. Pick skills that have a synergy together and pick a purpose for your build.
Synergy, in my own words, are skills that stack particularly well together. For example Burning Arrow and Poison Tip Signet. The burning with poison cause massive health degeneration. Dual Shot/Forked Arrow and Nightmare Weapon. Even though the two arrows will do less “damage” you will still steal 2x maximum health. Last example , Broad Head Arrow and D-shot. The daze will pretty much assure you will disrupt the enemies next spell with D-shot.
As for a purpose, some common ranger purposes are: condition spreader, interrupter, AOE damage and trapper. The advice here is focus on that one purpose and what could maximize your effect at it. Like the old saying, the jack of all trades is master of none. By this I mean make an effective skill combination to achieve your purpose, then concern yourself with utility skills. Just remember, if everyone is filling there job well, you won’t have to try to do everything. And NO, I’m not saying bring eight attack skills because your purpose is DPS. Think a build through, then test it.
I am of course simplifying. Because there are many other factors, like energy management, to consider. There are no hard fast rules for builds, it often comes down to skill and experience to really excel.

1) As long as u have a bow, staple D-Shot on the bar
2) If going for pressure use apply poison
3) In pvp unless impossible keep natural stride on the bar.
4) If splitting bring a self heal. Troll unguent is a good option usually because most bars have atleast some points in wilderness.
5) If going for a damage build, use atleast 12 marksmanship
6) If going for damage you need an IAS
7) If using skills that increase damage per arrow (eg ignite) then dual arrows/forked arrows are often worth the slot.
8) Work out how you are oging to manage energy. Is expertise enough, or do you need a zealous bow. If you need a zealous bow, realise that this means no conjures w/o kindle/conflagration/etc.
Basically work out what ur aim is, work out what skills help for this and finally stick d-shot on the bar regardless (unless not using a bow)

Preparation
Elite Attack
Attack
Attack
Distracting Shot
Defensive Stance / Troll Unguent
That's probably the core of a lot of decent Ranger builds in my opinion. Last 1 skills slots could be some form of utility / build enhancer like a Resurrection skill, Mending Touch, Antidote Signet, Rending Touch, Epidemic, or a PvE skill for example.
If you want to purely test builds then...Isle of the Nameless or Churrhir Fields - practice on the sand bags!
"Good elites" include Burning Arrow, Broad Head Arrow, Prepared Shot and Incendiary Arrows.
A lot of this is covered in the Ranger Guide sticky at the top of this forum. You can use the Ranger Guide which gives specimen builds for several types of playstyles and change / adapt them so that they suit you.

i wouldnt consider troll god mode. standing for 3 seconds trying to use it while standing still & getting beat up is definately worse than kiting and giving monks a chance to heal you. and you can argue with well just use a stance like natural stride to block. proving another point that having it would help you kite better giving monks an even easier time healing you. troll can be useful in gvg splits, but other than that i dont like it.

ignite arrows huh? im guessing you meant glass arrows? btw i wouldnt exclude melandru's shot and magebane.
now, to the OP, i would assume you're a ranger player since you said something about dshot. but if you want better interrupts, take read the wind. degen? burning arrow/incendiary arrows & apply poison, or poison arrow & barbed arrows. some people take advantage of expertise and go scythe rangers, dagger rangers, etc etc. the expertise can lower the energy cost of any attack skills to make them nearly spammable 24/7. in pve i tend to take lightning reflexes. in the end most of the good builds end up on pvx because any good builds get posted either by the creator or someone that copied the build.

My bad.

Unguent is a terrible self heal, and splitting isn't too smart either.
5) If going for a damage build, use atleast 12 marksmanship
6) If going for damage you need an IAS
7) If using skills that increase damage per arrow (eg ignite) then dual arrows/forked arrows are often worth the slot.
Damage builds on Rangers are gimmicks. Focus on spreading interrupts and conditions. Other classes are much better and killing than Rangers.
8) Work out how you are oging to manage energy. Is expertise enough, or do you need a zealous bow. If you need a zealous bow, realise that this means no conjures w/o kindle/conflagration/etc.
Energy management is the least concern for Rangers. Thanks to expertise.

kkz, list of good ranger elites:
incendiary arrows, barrage, burning arrow, cripshot, melandru's shot, magebane shot, broad head arrow, expert's dexterity, escape, enraged lunge, rampage as one.
That would be all unless I forgot about something.

i wasn't saying troll is godmode. i was saying the ranger template i mentioned is godmode. it is.
i also never said you use troll while melees are standing on top of you. better to use it before they get to you and have a cheap unstrippable heal to compliment ur blocking. and what are we talking about if not gvg splits? that's what rangers are for.

you also didnt say not to use it while people are on top of you. besides if you need troll to stay alive in a team thats just sad. and rangers being good at gvg is irrelevant since this thread was asking about builds and we discussed the scenerios to use certain skills in. this thread was not about gvg splits. and i did mention that in gvg it would be a good idea to take it but other than that leave it out of your skill bar.
to igor prepared shot is pretty good. concussion shot + prepared shot. assuming you can actually interrupt of course. and crip shot is pretty underused now that melandrus was reworked.

Oye, though prep shot aint really good for a turret and enrgy gain is not really needed unless youre using concussion. They still use cripshot too, pretty wonderful skill.

i like to assume people know how to use the skills i suggest, even if it may not be true. it's less work for me, initially at least.
a gvg split ranger build can beat pve. a pve build won't necessarily be useful in a gvg split. so by making builds with gvg splits in mind i'm also covering viable pve builds. if you're talking about pve i'm done, you don't need discusions about build efficiency in pve.
